A picture is worth a thousand words. This project tries to establish how many words a particular picture is actually worth. In order to do this, it brings together photographs from my photo series, the captions that I wrote for the pictures, and keywords added by the photo agency distributing them. The translation of the image into text is thus handled by an intermediate personified by an anonymous picture editor projecting on the images possible meanings expected from the viewer. Each image becomes reduced to an average of 20 words, with meanings found during the interpretation that were never intended, or noticed by the author. Photographs are glued onto A4-sized sheets of printed text to mimic an imaginary archive.
The work was shown at Kaunas Photo Festival: About Photography. Kaunas, Lithuania, 2012
