DEATHSCAPES
2020
The 19th century war photography was the first to document the atrocities of war and show them to the public. As early photographic processes, for many reasons, were not well suited to capture action, quite often, it instead focused on the scenes of the military action—the landscapes of war.
The project looks at landscapes in 21st century computer war games. The works are based on screenshots from game videos uploaded by players to video hosting services, which are then digitally altered to remove game attributes, such as weapons, players, interface elements, and shift the focus to the landscape. The resulting images are further processed, on the one hand making them more illusory, while on the other hand, increasing our readiness to perceive them as an uncanny document of 'reality'.
The work is part of a series of prints created for the Luch Festival of New Audiovisual Art at Yeltsin Centre, Ekaterinburg in 2020
